12 CALENDAR ANIMALS According to a Chinese legend, as the Buddha always forgets his age, he used 12 animals to symbolize the cycle of 12 years. He could find out the age easily by referring to the respective animal of that certain year. Therefore, he summoned all the animals to attend a meeting. The first 12 animals arriving would be designated the signs for the 12-year cycle. On the night before the meeting , the cat told his pal, the rat, the time and place to gather. They also agreed that the one waking up first must wake the other up so that they can go together. However, the rat broke his promise and went to the meeting by himself. The cat slept in and the meeting was over when he arrived. It is believed to be the reason why cats hate and prey on rats. All the other animals thought they'd arrive way ahead of time. So they took breaks again and again on their way to the meeting. The ox , on the other hand, knowing himself was a slow-walker, kept walking day and night without any rest. The rat was very cunning and it slept on the ox's head so that he got carried by the ox without moving a muscle. When the ox arrived at the meeting, the rat jumped off the ox's head and appeared at the top on the list. The poor ox came in at the second place only. Then, the tiger, the rabbit, the dragon, the snake, the horse, the ram, the monkey, the rooster, the dog and the pig arrived one after another. This has become the order of the 12 animals of zodiac from then on.
